The Retina Tamarona
Extensive cattle ranching was especially relevant at the beginning of Las Lomas’ history, going on to become a distinction of exclusivity that has lasted to date. The Retinta Tamarona, a breed that inhabits the estate’s pastures, has more than a century of history and owes its name to its founder, Mr. José de Mora-Figueroa and Daza, the 6th Marquess of Tamarón. At the start of the 20th century, the Marquess of Tamarón created his own herd of livestock and sought to maintain the purity of the livestock by selecting his own especially strong animals. That evolution process ended up generating its own breed with specimens of imposing size, reddish in colour, well-proportioned and with large antlers.
Thoroughbred
To this day, the cattle activity of Las Lomas has been taking a back seat in favour of agriculture. Even so, around 300 livestock are raised on the estate and have their own facilities. The Retinta Tamarona is registered in the National Association of Breeders of Select Retinta Breed Cattle.
Rearing
The herd is reared extensively in areas of pasture, natural grasslands and stubble throughout the year. The females remain on the estate as breeders, as well as the males selected for replacement of future studs. The Tamarona livestock has historically participated in important livestock fairs such as those in Vejer de la Frontera and Medina Sidonia, managing to win awards that recognised it as the best exhibition livestock.
