Industrial infrastructures

The agricultural operation is complemented with an agro-industrial area of fifty thousand square metres where the collected products are prepared, handled and transformed. Thanks to its location next to the fields, they can be harvested, processed and packaged in the same day; thus offering a product with the highest freshness and quality. The great industrial leap took place between the 70s and 80s, with the incorporation of unprecedented technological improvements in the Spanish countryside. Complejo Agrícola Las Lomas, for example, was a pioneer in introducing the first cotton and beet harvesters, as well as the first Challenger tractors. All developments and improvements were carried out internally, with the highest quality control. Complejo Agrícola Las Lomas and AINOSA are the current operators of the estate’s entire industrial infrastructure.www.laslomas.org

Technological revolution

In 2004, the works department of Complejo Agrícola became a subsidiary company, called AINOSA (Andaluza de Instalaciones y Obras, S.A). The objective: to further professionalise its experience in major transformations of agricultural estates, hydraulic works and electrical and irrigation installations, with the most avant-garde systems. Nowadays, AINOSA provides its services both to Complejo Agrícola and to other external companies, mainly linked to the rural and natural environment, but it has also diversified its activity with public and private works of urbanisation, rehabilitation, water supply, sports facilities, etc. In 2007, another great qualitative leap took place with the reform, expansion and introduction of new production lines of the fruit and vegetable plant. All this has contributed to turning this facility into a highly technical platform. A sophisticated gear that allows the vertical integration of the production and marketing process. There are currently two active plants for handling fruit and vegetable produce on the estate. The surface area of eleven thousand square metres houses different processing lines for each product and cold rooms. The level of effectiveness of these plants allows for a total capacity of over one hundred and fifty tonnes per day. The entire process is Lean certified and the strictest Food Safety protocols are met. Also in this area is the cotton gin, the only one in operation in the entire province of Cádiz. In it, the cotton is dried, the seed is separated, the fibre is cleaned and it is packed into compact bales. Its innovative facilities and large size make it possible to process the cotton on the estate, which is harvested in much of the province. Among the various resources enjoyed by the property, it is worth highlighting the cereal drying plant, its own workshops, a veterinary clinic and a service station with several fuel pumps. Electricity is distributed through a medium voltage overhead network of more than fifty-five kilometres in length, which has an anti-electrocution system for birds. A project promoted personally by the founder himself in 1988, and which led to the modification of the entire internal power supply to preserve the local bird life and, especially, the imperial eagle, an endangered species.

Water infrastructure

The estate has close to 5,000 hectares of surface area equipped with the most advanced and efficient irrigation systems. The irrigable areas are mostly supplied by three reservoirs: Barbate, Celemín and Almodóvar. It also has sixteen private groundwater collection wells inside the estate itself. Las Lomas has also been a pioneer in a more sustainable and rational use of a natural resource as precious as water. Until the early 80s, self-propelled irrigation machines were rotary, the so-called pivots. However, thanks to the innovative vision of Mr. José Ramón Mora and the talent of his employees, a brand new irrigation system was developed. In collaboration with American manufacturer Valmont Irrigation, a new self-propelled linear motion irrigation machine was launched. Known as the Ranger, it represented a significant qualitative leap in the mechanisation and effectiveness of large-surface irrigation. The company AINOSA is the current operator of the estate’s entire water and irrigation infrastructure. www.ainosa.es

Every drop counts

Another milestone of Las Lomas on an infrastructural level is the titanic work carried out to achieve the perfect levelling of the entire irrigable surface and its correct drainage. To do this, a network of perforated pipes of over 10,000 km has been installed, connected in a close circuit, which allows water to be reused during the irrigation period. Moreover, the quality of the soil has been optimised with various improvements, which are always environmentally friendly. The result: a wide variety of extensive herbaceous crops, vegetables and fruits with the aim of promoting a type of agriculture that is both innovative and sustainable in equal measure.

Electrical infrastructure

Electricity is distributed inside the estate through a medium-voltage aerial network of over 55 km in length, on 625 metal supports. This infrastructure provides service to 186 Transformation Centres to guarantee the electricity supply of the agro-industry, offices, homes and the almost 200 pumping equipment for irrigation and drainage, distributed across the entire surface area of the estate. The electricity starts from two sectioning, measurement and control centres that come from the Endesa distribution network. These centres were built by the property and still belong to Finca Las Lomas. It is currently Complejo Agrícola Las Lomas, through its subsidiary AINOSA, who is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of this internal network. In this area, one of the most important milestones was the action, and the economic effort, carried out in 1988 by Mr. José Ramón Mora-Figueroa to modify the estate’s entire electrical network with the aim of preserving the bird life in general, and the imperial eagle in particular. The transformation consisted of installing an extensive protection system on the supports to prevent the electrocution of birds. Going one step further, in 2002 the second generation drew up an agreement with the Government of Andalusia to participate in the imperial eagle recovery programme in Cádiz. Complejo Agrícola continues to actively collaborate in this programme to date, as well as in the maintenance, repair and replacement of worn materials in the anti-electrocution protection system.

Academic infastructure

The complex of buildings forming the SAFA Las Lomas school includes: a primary school building, a secondary school building and two nursery schools. Along with those are a sports hall, a canteen and two extensive recreational areas with athletics tracks, a 7-a-side football pitch, a 5-a-side football pitch and a basketball court. In total, it has over 2,200 m2 of built surface area aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle closely linked to the values of Las Lomas. The SAFA Foundation is the current operator of the estate’s entire educational infrastructure. www..safa.edu

Property assets

Within Finca Las Lomas, you can find different nuclei of real estate infrastructure that emerged in response to the development needs of the property. They are kept in good condition to this day and are also a living witness to the history of Las Lomas, a resource that has indisputable economic, historical and emotional value. The houses, the village, the church, the cinema, the school, the garages and the office areas, to name only the most symbolic buildings, have been kept as part of the legacy of Mr. José Ramón Mora Figueroa’s project. One of the most relevant projects within the property is the updating of these facilities to provide them with new uses. A working team is dedicated to assessing all possible options to adapt the real estate capital of Las Lomas to the current needs, whether these are operational or residential. The objective is a modernisation process that will remain faithful to the intrinsic values of the estate: excellence, comprehensive sustainability, respect for the environment and efficiency. The new facilities will be a model to follow for subsequent generations. Complejo Agrícola Las Lomas and Novaterra Gestión are the current operators of the estate’s real estate infrastructure.
